MONTGOMERY – Grant Schroeder and Sam Hochhauser claimed the 2017 Texas Golf Association South Four-Ball presented by Impact Precision Golf after firing a 10-under par round 62. The team of Schroeder and Hochhauser won by four strokes and finished with a 36-hole total of 15-under par 129. This year’s competition was held on the Weiskopf Course at Bentwater Yacht & Country Club.
Schroeder and Hochhauser, of Montgomery, fired a sizzling final round 10-under par round of 62 to claim their first South Four-Ball title. The team got off to a hot start and they kept the momentum going throughout the whole round. The duo traded six birdies during their opening front nine, each carding three, on their way to turn at 6-under par 30, and an 11-under par total for the Championship. Even though they were able to card an impressive opening nine total, the overnight leaders Joe Sanders and Ed Sanchez weren’t going away easily. Sanders, of Austin, and Sanchez, of San Antonio, were able to card four birdies on their opening nine and made the turn at 10-under par for the Championship, trailing by one.
Sanders and Sanchez were able gain a tie for the lead after a birdie on the par four 12th. However, Schroeder and Hochhauser kept their momentum going and regained the lead after a birdie on the par four 13th. Sanders and Sanchez carded two late bogies on the 14th and 16th and they weren’t able to rebound. Schroeder and Hochhauser continued their birdie train, with birdies on the par five 15th and a final birdie on the par four 18th. Their two-day total of 15-under par 129 was good enough to cruise to a four stroke victory.
Sanders and Sanchez finished in a tie for second place with a two day total of 11-under par 133 for the Championship. Cole Hammer and Chris Minton, of Houston, also finished tied for second after an impressive final round 8-under par 64.
The teams of Mike Booker and Justin Kaplan finished in a tie for fourth place alongside Scott Waltrip and Cameron Conway with a 36-hole total of 8-under par 136. Booker and Kaplan, of Houston, started the day one stroke back of the first round leaders and carded five birdies on the day on their way to a final round score of 3-under par 69. Waltrip and Conway, of Montgomery started the day four strokes back of the overnight lead and they carded six birdies on their way to a final round score of 6-under par 66.
