Gleneagles Country Club fights off River Crest to become 2025 Texas League Play Champions

Briefly: Plano’s Gleneagles won the title in thrilling fashion. The championship match versus River Crest CC ended with a playoff, with a 3-foot putt sealing the deal for Gleneagles. Since the inception of Texas League Play in 2006, this is the first time that Gleneagle CC has won the playoffs.

Final Results

Golf Course: Located about 30 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, Tapatio Springs Resort 18-hole facility hosted this year’s Texas League Play Playoffs. The resort-style course features many picturesque holes with tee shots overlooking the hill country nature. The course was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Tripp Davis. Tapatio’s 18-holes meanders through rolling hills and towering live oaks, with plenty of elevation changes affecting many shots.

Championship Match: Sunday’s championship match saw #4 Gleneagles CC face off against #7 River Crest CC. Both teams took 2 points out the gates through 9 holes. Gleneagles had to rely on their trusted scratch group of Chase Thomas and Brandon Bingaman to secure all 3 points in their match. After securing those points, we headed to a playoff, starting on hole 18. Thomas of Gleneagles stuck it to a few feet on his third shot. With River Crest failing to convert for birdie, Thomas had the three-footer to crown themselves champions. Thomas sunk the putt in front of his team, with proper celebrations following their victory. This was Gleneagles CC’s first time as Champions.

Semifinal Matches: We started Saturday morning with the Cinderella v future champion’s match. After Pecan and Gleneagles tied the front 9, Gleneagles took a small lead heading into the final holes, were they continued to halve points, leading to a close 6.5 – 5.5 victory, sending the incredible efforts of Pecan Plantation home. The final match of the morning saw Eagle Pointe continue dominance with their scratch group of Justin McKay and Jason Bryant. Unfortunately for the East Houston club, that was most of the points they received during the semifinals, eventually losing to River Crest by a score of 8.5 – 3.5.

Quarterfinal Matches: The quarterfinal matches started off in thrilling fashion. Eagle Pointe and Rockwall ended at 6.0 – 6.0 after play. After both teams birdied the first playoff hole, Eagle Pointe secured a birdie and victory on the par 3 17th to advance to the semifinals. River Crest CC advanced via forfeit to the semifinals of the playoffs. The third match saw Gleneagles continue their dominance over Victoria CC in a convincing effort, winning 8.5 – 3.5. The final quarterfinal match between Pecan Plantation and Tierra Verde saw the underdog #16 seed Pecan Plantation continue their Cinderella story, advancing through an 8.5 – 3.5 score.

Round of 16 Matches: Thursday was kicked off with the #1 v #16 match between Barton Creek and Pecan Plantation. The #16 seed Pecan Plantation wiped the floor against the top seed, winning 9.5 – 2.5, showing us that anyone can win with the right play. The second match saw Tierra Verde take down Nutcracker GC 7.5 – 4.5, with the first and last match taking all 3 points to help them advance to the quarterfinals. The third match included future champions Gleneagles CC versus Midland CC. Gleneagles fought hard on the back 9 to secure the win at 7.5 – 4.5. Victoria CC came out hot against Riverbend CC, with their play leading them to a 9.5 – 2.5 thrashing. In a closer affair, Sugar Tree GC defeated Green Tree CC 7.0 – 5.0, advancing them to the next round. In the biggest margin of victory, we saw River Crest CC defeat Odessa CC by a stunning 10.5 – 1.5. The large margins continued with Eagle Pointe GC taking on Lantana GC and defeating them 8.5 – 3.5. In the final match of the day between Rockwall G&AC and Brownwood CC, the play of Rockwall led them to the quarterfinals after a 7.5 – 4.5 victory.

TGA League Play: Texas League Play is open to all TGA members clubs that meet the club eligibility requirements. Participating clubs establish a four-club conference and compete over an eight-week regular season. The regular season consists of six interconference matches including three home and three away matches. Eight players represent each club on match day and play four-ball matches. Points are awarded in a Nassau style scoring with each of the four matches being worth three points.

What’s Next: The Texas Golf Association will head to Ridgewood Country Club in Waco for the playing of the 116th Texas Amateur Championship. The 116th Texas Amateur will be the first major of the year on the men’s competition schedule.
