Handicap Index

A Handicap Index® provides every golfer – regardless of age, gender or skill level – with a universal measure of playing ability.

As a Texas Golf Association member you will receive your Handicap Index through the Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN)®. A product of the United States Golf Association (USGA)®, GHIN is one of the largest handicap service providers in the world and is used by over 3 million golfers and more than 15,000 golf clubs.

A Handicap Index represents your demonstrated playing ability. It is based on your scores relative to the course and tees played during those rounds. Your Handicap Index is calculated the same way as golfers around the world, and it can be used on any course with a Course Rating™ and Slope Rating™.

There are plenty of reasons to establish and maintain a Handicap Index, no matter how often you play or how competitive you are, if at all!

You can use your Handicap Index to:

  • Track your individual progress over time and set goals for your game
  • Have a more accurate evaluation of your performance in each round
  • Play with any golfer on a fair and equitable basis
  • Compete in events requiring a Handicap Index, creating additional playing opportunities
  • See updates to your Handicap Index by posting scores from any course in Texas and around the world with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating
