Tyler and Jordan Frye lead after Round One of the 50th Texas Four-Ball

Tyler Frye of Richland Hills and Jordan Frye of Hurst fired a 6-under-par 66 to take the first-round lead Friday at the 50th Texas Four-Ball at Tempest Golf Club.

The brothers made four birdies in their first 10 holes before dropping a shot at the par-4 11th, which features a tee shot over water. They quickly bounced back, with Tyler birdieing No. 13 and Jordan adding another at No. 16 to cap their round.

The championship drew 75 teams across three divisions: Championship, Senior, and Super Senior.

Two teams are one shot back in the Championship Division. Zach Almandoz of Houston and Jackie Lindsey, along with Tyler’s Kyle Dickerson and Clay Hodges, each carded 5-under 67s.

Six teams are tied for fourth at 4-under 68, including defending champions Jake Istnick and Anthony Estorga of Dallas; Andrew Grice and Hudson Ross of Austin; and Chris Wheeler of Lewisville with partner Derek Abel of Dallas.

“Today was pretty good,” Abel said. “We were able to keep it in play, which I think is the most important thing about this golf course. We didn’t convert on a few holes, but we were in a good position and hopefully tomorrow will be good.”

Wheeler credited the duo’s long friendship as a key to their success.

“Yeah, we’ve known each other for like 30 years,” Wheeler said. “We know how to pick each other up and get it done.”

Rounding out the top 10, Kyle Robbins of Keller and Michael Smith of McKinney posted a 3-under 69 and remain in contention heading into Saturday’s second round.

In the Senior Division, David Johnson and Spring Neyland of Trophy Club, along with Don Gafner and Mark Motes of Dallas, share the lead after opening with 6-under 66s on Friday.

Johnson and Neyland, who started on the back nine, made an eagle on No. 10 to spark their round. They turned at 3-under 32 and added two birdies in their first three holes on the front side. After consecutive bogeys, the duo closed strong with a birdie on No. 9.

Gafner and Motes put together a bogey-free round highlighted by six birdies, including one at the demanding par-4 11th.

In the Super Senior Division, Scott Smith of Montgomery and David Ortega of Spring leaped up the leaderboad with an impressive 6-under 66 in Round One. Ortego helped with an eagle on No.10 while his teammate Smith strong together three birdies on the day and giving themselves a sizeable lead heading into moving day.

Stevon Trafton of Georgetown and Brad Greebon of San Marcos sit three shots back after a 3-under 69.

The official yardage for Round 1 was 7,167 yards in the Championship Division, 6,608 yards in the Senior Division and 5,920 yards in the Super Senior Division.

Round 2 of the 50th Texas Four-Ball begins Saturday at 7:40 a.m., with the Senior and Super Senior divisions leading off the morning wave from Nos. 1 and 10 tees. The Championship Division will tee off in the afternoon.
