Fields holds lead after Second Round at 12th Women’s Stroke Play Championship
Stalee Fields of Lantana maintained her lead after the second round of the 12th Women’s Stroke Play Championship. The Kansas State women’s golfer carded an even-par 72 and takes a three-stroke lead into the final round.
Fields came into the second round with a solid cushion and looked to build on it. The Lantana native opened with three straight pars before a birdie on No. 4 stretched her lead further. A bogey on No. 7 slowed her momentum, but she answered right back with a birdie on No. 8, only to give a shot back with a bogey on No. 9, making the turn even for the day.
Fields found her best golf of the day on the back nine, carding a birdie and seven pars before a late bogey on No. 17. She closed with a par on No. 18 to head into the clubhouse with the lead intact after a solid second-round 72.
Chasing Fields is UTSA women’s golfer Lauren Rios of Coppell, who sits alone in second after a 2-under round to move to 1-over for the event, three strokes back of the lead.
In solo third is Dallas Baptist commit Madeline Buckley, who carded a 2-over 74 to sit at 3-over for the event. Tied for fourth at 4-over are Dallas Baptist golfer and 105th Women’s Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US finalist Ella Cheek of Sachse, Melay Dittrich of Spring and Indiana University golfer Grace Heiss of Dallas.
Mia Nixon of Martins Mill and Isabella Flores of Kingwood are tied for sixth at 6-over for the event. Rounding out the top 10 are Baylor golfer Sophia Ellestad of Houston, Chloe Sirkin of Colleyville and Claire McMyler of San Antonio, all at 7-over.
Shannon Fish-Martin of Montgomery grew her lead in the Mid-Amateur Division. Coming off an even-par 72 in the first round, the former Texas Longhorn golfer carded two birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 34. She kept the pressure on with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 to extend her lead, then gave back a stroke with a bogey on No. 13 before answering with a birdie on No. 16. Fish-Martin closed with a 4-under 68 in Round 2, building a sizeable lead heading into the final round of the division’s inaugural year in the championship.
Players were welcomed with ideal weather once again for the second round. Temperatures started in the high 70s with strong humidity and little to no wind as the first group teed off. As the overcast sky broke and the sun came out, temperatures climbed into the low-to-mid 90s, with humidity reaching 55% for the day.
The final round of the 12th Women’s Stroke Play Championship will begin Sunday at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 1 tee, with Mid-Amateur Division players going off first, followed by the Championship Division.
