San Antonio – Duncanville’s Daniel Ferguson fires an impressive 3-under 69 in tough conditions at Olmos Basin Golf Course to lead the Boys Division of the Alamo Shootout after the first round. The Woodlands’ Makenzie Minshew, Houston’s Sophia Ellestad, and San Antonio’s Lydia Portlock are all tied for the lead in the Girls Division at 1-over 73 heading into the final round.
Leaderboard:
Leaders: Ferguson carded four birdies and one bogey en route to a first round 69. The 2024 Boys Player of the Year played a steady and consistent opening round despite cold & wet conditions, and a stoppage in play. In the Girls Division, Houston’s Sophia Ellestad and San Antonio’s Lydia Portlock continued the trend of steady play. Ellestad recorded one birdie to two bogeys, while Portlock recorded 17 pars and one bogey on the day to finish at 1-over 73. The Woodland’s Makenzie Minshew’s round saw a bit more action as she rolled in three birdies with four bogeys for her round of 73.
In Contention: Austin’s J.P. Lynch trails Ferguson by one shot heading into the final round. Lynch shot out to 4-under par before dropping a couple shots to finish at 2-under 70. Allen’s Rohan Shastry rounds out the top three with another impressive under par round of 1-under 71. Austin’s Dylan Knox and Henry Talarico, Dallas’s Jack Clancy, New Braunfels’s Vincent Porras, and Broussard LA’s Noah Chauvin are all tied for fourth at even-par 72. In the Girls Division, Austin’s Rori Reynolds holds the fourth-place spot at 3-over 75 and San Antonio’s Addison Braden rounds out the top five in fifth place at 4-over 76.
Event Format: The Alamo Shootout is a 36-hole stroke play event with players competing in two divisions: Boys 12-18 and Girls 12-18. The field was selected based on the order of player registration.
Weather: Players battled through tough conditions today as temperatures started in the mid 40’s and rose to only 50 degrees by the afternoon. Players endured light rain throughout the morning. Play was suspended for 50 minutes due to lightning and heavy rain shortly after the first round began.
Golf Course: Originally designed by George Hoffman and opened in 1963, the course underwent a major renovation in 2021, using the latest in golf course infrastructure. The redesign by Jeffrey D. Blume, ASGCA, was completed in November 2021. Situated in the heart of San Antonio, just north of Brackenridge Park, Olmos Basin offers a fun and accessible experience for all golfers, from beginners to scratch players. The course features long par 3s, reachable par 5s, and a creek that adds challenge throughout.
What’s next: The Final Round of the Alamo Shootout is scheduled to begin at 8:00 AM on Sunday off the No. 1 & 10 tees. At the conclusion of play on Sunday, the top finishers will be awarded.
