Defending Champions Maurer and Cook Lead North Four-Ball Championship
(Anna, TX) Forty-four teams headed into Saturday’s opening
round of the North Four-Ball Championship looking to capture the first North
Player of the Year points of 2014. Included in this year’s teams were defending
champions, Scott Maurer and Peyton Cook, who looked to continue their victorious
play at the 6,944 yard Hurricane Creek Country Club. Cool morning temperatures
finally gave way and the players were welcomed with comfortable windy
conditions in which to compete.
Posting a low score early was the team of Mike Calef and
Kevin Somers. After beginning their round with four straight pars, Calef caught
fire and carded four straight birdies of his own to give his team momentum
heading into the back nine. After another birdie on their eleventh hole of the
day Somers rolled in his eagle putt on the par-five sixth to take he and Calef
to seven under par. Two finishing birdies coming down the stretch gave the team
an opening round of nine under par, 63. Also carding a low round early in the
day was the team of Greg Boots and Chip Carter. Their round of 64 which
consisted of seven birdies, one eagle, and a bogey places them in third place
heading into tomorrow’s final round.
In the final pairing of the day, defending champions Scott
Maurer and Peyton Cook looked to continue their stellar play from the previous
year. After beginning their round with three straight pars Maurer and Cook took
charge carding three birdies and an eagle leading to an opening nine of five
under. Continuing their stellar play, the team then carded four birdies and an
eagle within a five-hole stretch giving them an opening round of eleven under
par, 61. This gives Maurer and Cook a two stroke lead heading into Sunday’s
final round.
