Chamness wins the 11th Women’s Stroke Play
TAPATIO SPRINGS – Yvonne Chamness, a rising senior on the Texas State Women’s golf team shot a final round 72 to win the 11th Women’s Stroke Play Championship by five shots over Savannah Dupre. Overcoming a weather delay and sluggish start on the front nine, the Austin native made the turn making a birdie at number ten. She would follow that up with birdies on twelve, thirteen and seventeen on the final nine.
“Yeah, the key today was staying patient. With weather delays we waited two or three hours and once I got out on course the range had been closed, and I felt cold and did not have my regular game. I know eighteen holes is a lot of golf and my game will show up eventually,” Chamness said.
When asked how she was able to get her game going Chamness said “For me it takes one good swing or putt, and then it clicks, and I was on a roll the entire second nine”.
Chamness had rounds of 67-71-72 for a 6-under par total of 210. Her gutsy final round included ten pars and four birdies.
Coming in second was Boerne’s own Savannah Dupre. She shot rounds of 72-68-75 for a 1-under score of 215.
For the Low Mid-Amateur Championship Division, the winner was Courtney Dow from Plano. Dow fired a final round 2-under 70 for a total of 226. “It was fun to get the competitive juices flowing again”, Dow said.
