Cersosimo wins playoff to claim 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US
Jack Cersosimo of Round Rock is the 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur champion, outlasting Coy Dobson of Austin in a playoff Sunday at Wichita Falls Country Club.
The two finished regulation deadlocked at 8-under 205, and sudden death lasted just one hole. Dobson’s opening tee shot sailed out of bounds, and Cersosimo closed it out with a par on No. 18 to claim the title.
The win carries rewards well beyond this week. Cersosimo earns an exemption into the next five Texas Mid-Amateurs, beginning with Shadow Hawk Golf Club in 2027 and Willow Brook Country Club in 2028.
It was a championship built on consistency for both finalists. Cersosimo posted rounds of 68, 69 and 68, Dobson countered with 70, 69 and 66, and neither player finished a single round over par.
Cersosimo, who sat one shot off the lead after both Round One and Round Two, started Sunday the way he had played all week: steadily. He opened with pars on Nos. 1 and 2, then made his first birdie of the day at the par-4 third to move to 1-under. He parred the par-3 fourth and made another birdie at No. 5 to get to 2-under.
The par-5 sixth, where he had made birdie on Saturday, went for par this time, as did No. 7. He picked up his third birdie of the day at the par-4 eighth and parred No. 9 to make the turn in 3-under 32.
The back nine was quieter. After a par on the par-5 10th, Cersosimo made a 2 at the par-3 11th for his fourth and final birdie of the day. That put him at 4-under for the round and 9-under for the championship. From there he made six straight pars on Nos. 12 through 17, including the par-5 15th. He played all three par 5s in even par for the day.
A bogey at the par-4 18th, where he had also dropped a shot on Saturday, left him at 3-under 68 and 8-under 205 for the championship.
Dobson, meanwhile, began the day tied for sixth and three shots off the lead. A bogey at No. 3 slowed him early, but he bounced right back with a birdie at the par-3 fourth and added another at No. 9 to make the turn at 1-under 34. The back nine turned in his favor. Birdies at Nos. 10 and 12 got him rolling, and two more at Nos. 15 and 16 moved him to 5-under for the day. He closed with pars at 17 and 18 for a 66.
Just behind the two finalists, defending champion Kade Stewart of Tomball and John Hunter of The Woodlands tied for third at 6-under 207, two shots out of the playoff. Stewart put together a 3-under 68 and moved up three spots. Hunter and Christopher Wheeler of Lewisville began the day tied atop the leaderboard at 6-under, but neither could keep pace. Hunter shot an even-par 71, and Wheeler, a past champion, fell to fifth at 5-under 208 after a 1-over 72.
Colby Harwell of San Antonio, another past champion, climbed eight spots to sixth at 4-under 209 with a 3-under 68. Tye Grissom of Austin and Zach Atkinson of Colleyville tied for seventh at 3-under 210, and Brett Callas of Houston was ninth at 2-under 211.
Five players tied for 10th at 1-under 212: past champion Clay Hodge of Tyler, Kevin Graves of Plano, Paul McNamara of Plano, Brad Mason of Dallas and Austin Cotton of Austin. Hodge and Graves each jumped 16 spots with matching 3-under 68s.
Gray skies hung over Wichita Falls Country Club on Sunday, with temperatures in the mid-70s and rain that play a constant factor all day.
