Bounds Wins 17th Texas Girls’ Invitational in Three-Hole Playoff
HORSESHOE BAY – Dresden Bounds of San Antonio captured the 17th Texas Girls’ Invitational title in dramatic fashion, prevailing in a three-hole playoff after finishing at 7-over par following a grueling weekend of competition.
The Class of 2027 standout began the final round in fourth place, three shots off the lead, and relied on steady ball-striking and mental toughness to climb the leaderboard.
“It feels good and I’m really excited,” Bounds said.
Teeing off at 9:30 a.m. in the penultimate group, Bounds opened with a bogey on No. 2 but steadied herself with pars on Nos. 3, 4 and 5. She recorded her first birdie of the day on No. 6 before giving a shot back with a bogey on No. 7. Consecutive pars on Nos. 8 and 9 kept her within striking distance at the turn.
Bounds made her move on the back nine. A birdie on No. 10 sparked momentum, and after a par on No. 11, she added another birdie on No. 12 as the leaderboard tightened. A bogey on No. 13 briefly stalled her progress, but she remained composed down the stretch, forcing a playoff with Krysta Loftin of Pearland, who birdied No. 18 to match Bounds at 7-over.
The first playoff hole tested both players immediately. Loftin split the fairway while Bounds found the rough left of the fairway. Loftin hit the green and spun her approach toward the front, while Bounds finished just beyond the green. Both salvaged pars.
On the second playoff hole, both players again found the fairway but hit their approaches long, leaving delicate downhill chips. Each chipped past the hole and two-putted from approximately 12 feet, extending the playoff.
With tees moved back for the third playoff hole, the decisive moment arrived. Loftin’s tee shot drifted right, leaving her behind a split tree near the fairway bunkers. Bounds found the fairway. Loftin was forced to pitch out before reaching the green, effectively conceding a stroke advantage. Bounds capitalized, hitting her approach just past the hole and leaving an 8-foot downhill putt. She two-putted for par to secure the championship and claim her first Legends Junior Tour major title.
“I feel like endurance and staying one shot at a time was important,” Bounds said. “Staying in the moment, not getting ahead of myself. I had a really bad nine-hole stretch, but other than that I feel like I did a good job of staying present this weekend.”
Bounds, who has signed with Oklahoma State’s women’s golf program, said competing in challenging conditions and enduring a playoff will prepare her for the collegiate level.
“I think anytime I get to play in conditions like this and experience it, it’ll help me for college,” she said.
With the victory, Bounds earns exemptions into the 18th Texas Girls’ Invitational at Bentwater Yacht & Country Club, the 100th Texas Junior Amateur presented by Edwin Watts Golf at Stonebriar Country Club, the 2026 Bluebonnet Championship, the 2026 George Hannon Junior Invitational and the 2026 Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational.
Loftin, a Houston Christian women’s golf commit, finished second after rounds of 73-73-77 (7-over). Carolyn Liu of Katy placed third at 8-over (71-77-76). Natalie Nobles of Navasota finished fourth at 10-over (77-72-77), and Esther Li of Houston rounded out the top five at 12-over (76-78-73).
