
Baugh Overtakes, Grace Retains Lead in Texas Super Senior Amateur
ABILENE — Bobby Baugh of San Antonio maintained his under-par run, with a three-under-par 68 to overtake the lead at the Texas Super Senior Amateur after 36 holes. Posting a tied for low-round in his division, John Grace shot 67 to maintain his three-shot lead in the Legends Division after round two.
Leaders: Bobby Baugh began his round two-under-par through three holes. His hot start kept him under par all day, posting a second round, three-under 68. Baugh is one of two players in the division to post consecutive rounds under par, with a 69 yesterday, to perch himself atop the leaderboard at -5. Baugh will tee off at 10:36am tomorrow morning off the 1st hole. In the Legends Division, John Grace maintained his multi-shot lead posting a four-under-par 67. Grace also started well with a birdie on the first. Four more birdies on the card with one bogey on the par-4 5th hole propelled him to a three-shot lead in the Legends Division. Grace will tee off at 10:27am tomorrow morning off the 10th hole.
In Contention: In the Super Senior Division, Saginaw’s Dave Davis remains in solo 2nd with a second-round 70, sitting one shot behind the lead at -4. Davis is the only other player in the division to post two consecutive rounds under par. Coming in late, David Leiss carded 6 birdies and two bogeys to shoot a tied-for-best round of the day, 67. His round for today was six shots better than yesterday (73-67). John McClure, hailing from Austin, posted a two-under-par 69 to round out the top three, sitting in a tie for third with David Leiss at -2 for the championship. In the Legends Division, Bill Holstead also shot the tied for low round of 67 on the day to remain in solo 2nd, three shots behind Grace. Ed Brooks from Fort Worth found himself in the top 3 with a one-over-par round of 72 on the day. Brooks sits at +8 in solo 3rd for the championship.
Highlights: In the Super Senior Division, Mike Booker was the biggest mover on the leaderboard, bettering his first round by six shots (77-71) to find himself in a tie for 10th place, at +6 for the championship. In the Legends Division, Lee Roy Pearson played his second round thirteen shots better than his first (88-75), to move up to 7th.
Round 2 Stats: Today’s Super Senior Division was contested at 6,074 yards while the Legends Division played at 5,210 yards for the second round. Among the entire field, the par-4 5th hole played as the toughest on the day with a 4.78 scoring average. The par-4 9th played as the easiest, with a 4.16 average.
Course: Opened in 1999, Live Oak Golf Club was designed by Abilene resident and 1971 Masters champion Charles Coody, along with Williams, Gill & Associates. Situated on 220 acres of rolling terrain, the par-71 course, which can stretch to nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees, features dramatic rock outcroppings, extensive native areas, and Lytle Creek coming into play on nearly half the holes.
Tournament History: First played in 2015, the Texas Super Senior features two age divisions: 65 and older (Super Senior) and 75 and older (Legends). Entries are open to male amateur golfers who meet the age requirements by the first round of tournament play and have a certified Handicap Index® of 12.4 or less (16.4 or less for Legends) issued through a TGA Member Club.
Tournament Format: The format for the championship is 54 holes of individual stroke play with no cut. Each age division competes from different tees and yardages, with a separate net champion recognized. Prizes are also awarded to low net scores in both Super Senior and Legends Divisions.
POY Points Race: Super Senior Player of the Year points will be awarded to the top twenty (20) finishers of the Texas Super Senior. The champion will get 1000 points towards the statewide honor followed by 750 for runner-up, 650 for third, 600 for fourth and 550 for fifth. What’s Next: The third and final round of the Texas Super Senior will tee off at 8:30AM off holes #1 and #10 at Live Oak Golf Club. Following today’s second round, the field has been re-paired based on scores with the leaders of the Super Senior Division going last off hole #1 and the leaders of the Legends Division going last off hole #10.
