An, Parmar tied for lead at Texas Cup Invitational

BROOKELAND – Mason An of Houston and Selma’s Shiv Parmar separated themselves from the field on moving day and are tied for first after the second round of the 2025 Texas Cup Invitational at Rayburn Resort. Both players sit at 6-under 134 heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Mason An shot a second consecutive 3-under 67 in the second round of the Texas Cup to put himself tied for first with one round to go in his first LJT Major. He put together another solid round on the course limiting his mistakes and capitalizing on ideal scoring conditions. Starting his second round on No. 1, An had an early blemish on his scorecard with a quick bogey but settled into his round making birdies on four of his next six holes. A costly triple-bogey on the long par 4 ninth hole only slowed him down for a moment before birding his next hole. An would go on to play a bogey free second nine with two more birdies, totaling his birdie count to seven for the day and 12 on the tournament through 36-holes.

Shiv Parmar, who shared the first-round lead with An and three others, continued to play well as he posted another round of 3-under in round two. The Texas A&M commit again got off to a hot start making three birdies after opening his round with a par on the par 4 first hole. Parmar would go on to make one bogey during his round which came on the difficult par 4 sixth, which played as the fourth hardest hole during the second round. His final bridie of the day came on No. 14, which is the second par 5 on the back nine. Parmar’s second round score of 67 included four bridies, 13 pars, and one bogey.

One shot off the lead, in solo third place, is round one co-leader Coltrane Mittag of Ashland, Nebraska. The Oklahoma commit had a hard-fought day that included seven birdies and five bogeys. Sitting at 5-under 135, Mittag will round out the final group of the day tomorrow.

In fourth place at 3-under 137 is Midland’s Alex Escamilla. He will look to continue his momentum heading into the final round after scores of even par 70 in round one and his second round 3-under 67.

Sitting in a tie for fifth place at 2-under 138 is the trio of Jacob Baker of Mt. Pleasant, Andre Follmer of The Hills, and Spencer Carter of Dallas. Follmer, who won the 2025 Winter Classic earlier this year, had the lowest round of the tournament during his second round with a 4-under 66.

The starting field of 84 players was cut to the low 30, plus ties, which included players sitting at 5-over par 145 through 36-holes. Heading into the final round of the 2025 Texas Cup Invitational, 11 players sit at even-par or better, and find themselves in position to make a run at the first LJT Boys major of the season.

The second round greeted players with clear and sunny skies with the morning temperature quickly rising into the afternoon. By the time play started, the temperature was in the low 50’s before reaching the high of 76 degrees in the afternoon. The wind slightly picked up in the second round as players saw mild wind gusts up to 14 mph.

Nestled in the hills surrounding Lake Sam Rayburn, Rayburn Resort is a hidden gem. The 18-hole course features 150 feet of elevation change, along with new greens, tees, bunkers, and fairways designed to challenge golfers of all skill levels.

The front nine was designed in 1968 by Jay Riviere, known for contributions on the restoration of Memorial Park Golf Course, Jackrabbit Course at Champions Golf Club, and the design of Panorma Golf Club. This stretch features only one hole with water but compensates with tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkering around the greens.

The back nine was designed by world-renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, whose portfolio includes Shady Oaks Country Club, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the Olympic Club Lake Course, and West Point Golf Course. This section of the course is characterized by four dog-leg holes and a tighter layout than the front nine.

No. 16 continued to play as the toughest hole. During the second round the par 4 saw two birdies, 50 pars, 24 bogeys, and seven double-bogeys or worse.

The Texas Cup Invitational, the first of the two boys-only majors on the LJT annual schedule, is the LJT boy’s first 54-hole event of the year.

The official yardage for the second round was 6,328 yards and played as a par 70.
