Ahlowalia Wins the 105th Women’s Texas Amateur Presented by Hytera US

IRVING – Gia Ahlowalia of Southlake wins the 105th Women’s Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US at The Nelson Golf & Sports Club’s TPC Course. The Texas Christian University commit won 1 up in the Championship Match.

Ahlowalia was 2 up through four holes in the Championship Match on Friday. Her opponent, Ella Cheek, tied the match after a birdie on the par-3 fifth and an eagle on the par-5 seventh. Ahlowalia would respond by winning the eighth and ninth holes with birdie and made the turn 2 up with nine holes to play.

Cheek and Ahlowalia tied the 10th and 11th before each won back-to-back holes on No. 12 and No. 13. Cheek rolled in a birdie putt on the par-4 14th and the par-4 15th to win both holes and tie the match.

Both players made par on the par-5 16th and both were behind the green on the par-3 17th. The duo was able to chip close to the hole, but Ahlowalia was able to make the putt and win the hole. The No. 6 seed was 1 up walking to the 18th tee.

Ahlowalia found the rough to the right of 18 fairway and hit her second shot into a greenside bunker. She took her stance and blasted her bunker shot close to the hole, which was conceded. Cheek had 20 feet for birdie as the putt rolled past the hole, securing the win for Ahlowalia.

“I mean, I played amazing from putting all the way to hitting drivers, I played lights out and I’m super excited for this experience and playing here,” said Ahlowalia about her week.

The Women’s Texas Amateur is one of the elite events in the state each year. The 96-player field competes across five days in the heat of the summer. Past champions of this event include Betsy Rawls, Babe Didrikson, Polly Riley, Betty Jameson and now Gia Ahlowalia.

“I am so honored to win this event,” said Ahlowalia. “I think that there are so many great players in the past from Texas who have won this event and now I’m one of them.”

The Women’s Texas Amateur is an official USGA Exemption Event, which earns Ahlowalia an exemption into the United States Women’s Amateur. The event is being held at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. on Aug. 4-9, 2026. Ahlowalia was beaming with excitement about earning a spot in the tournament this year.

“I’m so excited to go. I was there last year and I’m so excited to get back,” said Ahlowalia.

This is the second of four USGA Exemption Events on the Texas Golf Association calendar in 2026. The Texas Amateur champion was crowned last week and the Boys and Girls winners of the 100th Texas Junior Amateur next week will earn exemptions into the US Junior Amateur and US Girls’ Junior.

The Championship Bracket featured the top 32 scores from the Qualifying Round. The remaining players were flighted in eight flights. The flight winners were also crowned on Friday.

The Nelson Golf & Sports Club is hosting the Women’s Texas Amateur for the first time in the event’s history. The TPC Course plays to a par-70 and features elevated greens and narrow fairways as players meander around Cottonwood Creek.  The club opened in 1983 and was the longtime host of the PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Championship for 35 years.

The Texas Golf Association is proud to announce that the 106th Women’s Texas Amateur will be contested at Ridgewood Country Club in Waco on July 6-9, 2026. The next event on the schedule for the Women is the Women’s Stroke Play Championship, which is being held at Bentwater Yacht & Country Club on July 24-26, 2026.
