Hymer Wins the South Amateur

Briefly: After tying in regulation at 14-under par, both Alex Malanga of The Woodlands and Jackson Hymer from San Antonio went to a playoff at hole No.10. The match didn’t end there as both players tied the first hole pushing for a second playoff hole. In the end Hymer took the victory after winning the hole with a birdie.

Results

Top Finishers: Hymer secured his victory by gaining two strokes on Malanga in the final round. Hymer posted his three-day total for the weekend 70-66-66—202 to get to 14-under par. Malanga led the first two days. His 54-hole journey consisted of 64-70-68­—202. Malanga’s opening round of 8-under par 64 set a new course record at the recently renovated Corpus Christi Country Club.

In third place, McAllen’s own Esteban Gonzalez went 68-69-68—205 to post 11-under for the weekend. Tied for fourth was Braden Smith from Lago Vista and Bryce Womack of San Antonio. Smith shot 71-66-71—208 while Womack posted 66-71-71­—208 to finish at 8-under par for the championship.

Golf Course: Corpus Christi Country Club was founded in 1922 and moved to its current location on Everhart Road in 1963 with an 18-hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The course was renovated by Chet Williams in 2021 to fortify the strategic elements of Jones’s original design.

Weather: Sunny skies prevailed all weekend, with a light breeze accommodating for the highs in the upper 90s. However, on the third day, the course experienced an overcast, making the day slightly cooler.

Regional POY: South Player of the Year points will be awarded to the top finishers at the 2024 South Mid-Amateur. Hymer will receive 1000 points, followed by 800 for second, 700 for third, 650 for fourth, and 600 for fifth. For Regional POY information,  click here.

What’s Next: Next on the state championship schedule is the 49th Texas Four-Ball which will be contested August 23-25 at BraeBurn Country Club in Houston, TX.

After the Texas Four-Ball is the 41st Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US and 87th Texas Senior Amateur qualifying is underway for the TGA with sites scattered across the state for the next six weeks.

The Texas Mid-Amateur will be hosted by Denton Country Club September 6-8. The Texas Senior Amateur will be hosted by The Nelson Golf and Sports Club September 27-29.
