CORINTH – The team of Yvonne Chamness and Mattingly Palmer win the 17th Women’s Four-Ball Championship, delivering impressive rounds of 65 and 66 in challenging windy conditions at Oakmont Country Club.

Championship Flight: Georgetown and Austin natives, Chamness and Palmer, extended their lead in the Final Round to secure a four-stroke victory. The Texas State juniors carded back-to-back birdies on the 4th and 5th holes, the 11th and 12th holes, and the 14th and 15th holes. Overall, the team saw a total of twelve birdies and one eagle with only a single bogey in each round. This marks their first time winning for the Women’s Four-Ball.
Tournament Flight: Camm Dougherty, of Corpus Christi, and D’Lynn McCoppin, of Corinth, won the First Flight with a 36-hole total 138, maintaining their four-stroke lead with a final round score of 2-under-par 70. The team’s consistency in pars and timely birdies helped them achieve a solid final score of 70.
Finishing tied for second in their flight and four-strokes from the lead were the teams of Lynda Kay and Kristen Gilbert, of Montgomery, and Jennifer Hoyt, of Horseshoe Bay, and Marian Barker, of Lubbock. Kay and Gilbert fired consecutive rounds of 1-under 71 with a total of four birdies each day.
The mother-daughter duo An and Hoa Shelmire from Dallas posted consecutive rounds of 73 for a tournament total of 146, to win the Second Flight. Finishing in solo second was the team of Jan Rapp, of Dallas, and Kemberly Barrett, of Woodway with a Final Round score of 3-over 75. Rapp and Barrett both had birdies on the front nine with an additional birdie on the par-3 17th hole made by Barrett and improved their First-Round score by three strokes.
Flight Three saw Lili Taufa, of Austin, and Stacy Cohen, of Georgetown, successfully retain their four-stroke lead with an 8-over 80 in today’s Final Round. Brent had a birdie on the par-5 6th hole in the First Round and a birdie on the par-4 1st hole in today’s round. Four strokes back from the lead was the team of Natasha Hawes, of Bedford, and Carley White, of Aledo who finished runner-up in their flight.
In a close Flight Four race, Oakmont Country Club members Donna Hart, of Corinth, and Laura Brent, of Celina, secured a win with a final round score of 83. The second-place team of Kay Beard, of Richmond, and Sharon Cole, of Sugar Land, made significant moves up the leaderboard in today’s Final Round, improving their First-Round score by eight strokes.
Finally, in Flight Five, Sabra Fullwood, of Amarillo, and Crystal Cross, of Leander, triumphed with a Final Round score of 89. The team of Christy Jacob, of DeSoto, and Mindi Rowland, of Fort Worth, fired consecutive rounds of 83 to finish in solo second place.

POY Points Race: By winning, Chamness and Palmer will be awarded 450 points towards Statewide Player of the Year standings.
Weather: Players faced challenging weather conditions in the final round of the 17th Women’s Four-Ball Championship, with winds of 17 mph and gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Temperatures also peaked at 97 degrees during the round.
Tournament History: This year marks Women’s Four-Balls’ 17th year on the schedule and is the fourth women’s statewide championship in 2024. The tournament is a 36-hole four-ball stroke play event with teams competing in two separate divisions, the Championship Division and the Flights Division. The ten teams with the lowest combined handicap indexes will be required to play from the championship tees. Those who do not wish to play in the championship division will be placed in the flights division and pre-flighted based on their combined handicap indexes.
The inaugural Women’s Four-Ball was held in 2007 at the Golf Club of Houston, which recently hosted the 101st Women’s Texas Amateur. Now in its 17th edition, the Women’s Four-Ball continues to attract some of the state’s most elite female amateur golfers.
What’s Next: The 10th Women’s Stroke Play Championship will take place at The Woodlands Country Club (North Course) on September 13-15, 2024.
