DALLAS — Andrew Lawson of Dallas and Daniel Choi of Keller share the 36-hole lead at the 115th Texas Amateur. They hold a one-stroke advantage over the field heading into moving day.
Round 2 at the 115th Texas Amateur welcomed back the 144-player field for another full day of competitive golf at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Lawson, a host club member and recent Trinity Forest Club Champion, shot an impressive 8-under 64, climbing 11 spots on the leaderboard.
“I got off to a really good start with birdies on the first few holes,” Lawson said. “I kept the ball close and didn’t face long putts. Overall, I played solid and didn’t do anything out of the ordinary.”
Jones, who posted a 13-under total at the Trinity Forest Club Championship last weekend, aims to add another trophy to his collection.
“I love this place,” the Dallas native added. “It feels like family out here, and I enjoy competing. It’ll be fun to give it my best this weekend.”
Choi continued his strong play in Round 2 with a 6-under 66. The Duke University golfer is seeking his first Texas Golf Association major championship heading into the weekend.
“Today went really well; I hit the ball well,” Choi said. “I didn’t find myself out of position much, and I avoided any double-bogeys, so that’s positive.”
Choi, coming off his first season at Duke University, aims to bring the H.L. Edwards trophy back to Durham, North Carolina, on Sunday.
Following the clubhouse leaders is Reese Roberts of Dallas. Roberts competed in last week’s 25th Veritex Bank Byron Nelson Junior Championship and continued his strong play with an outstanding 9-under 63.
“Everything went perfectly, other than my one three-putt on No. 10,” said the University of Missouri commit. “I hit irons well, drove well, and putted well. I did pretty much everything perfectly today.”
Roberts, a senior at Dallas Jesuit, carded no bogeys and recorded the lowest second-round in the field.
“My ball-striking has been good, and I haven’t missed too many fairways in the last few rounds I’ve played, so just making those putts today led to the 9-under,” Roberts shared.
In solo fourth is Seth Bearden, who is a sophomore at Midwestern State University looking to continue his strong form. Bearden, named a Ping All-American to finish the 2024 season, heads into the 115th Texas Amateur.
“It went pretty well today,” said the Crowell native. “I started off with a rocky par on No. 10 where the putter bailed me out, but I bounced back on No. 12 and hit it to three feet for birdie.”
Bearden carded only one bogey to complete his second-round 66 and stay well within the leaders heading into moving day.
Tied for the lead at 8-under after 36 holes are Chris Wheeler of Addison, Finn Burkholder of The Woodlands, Andrew Baucum of Heath, and Andre Jacobs of League City.
Wheeler, who has won multiple championships with the Texas Golf Association including the 2024 North Mid-Amateur, aims to add Texas Amateur Champion to his resume. Having conquered this course in the 2021 Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play, Wheeler sets himself up nicely heading into the weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 are Trevor Mierl of Austin, Charlie Holland of Dallas, Luke Colton of Frisco, Carson Cooper of Spring, and Joe Stover of Dallas.
Mierl, who qualified for the 115th Texas Amateur after competing in the 9th U.S. Men’s Four-Ball with his brother Trent, seeks the H.L. Edwards Trophy.
Tied with him is Holland, a former Texas Amateur Champion himself. Holland won the H.L. Edwards trophy in 2007 at Whispering Pines Golf Club over current PGA Tour player Andrew Landry. Now he looks to become a two-time champion, a feat achieved only 10 times in the event’s history.
Round 2 played at an official yardage of 7,192, with No. 11 as the hardest hole, yielding only 18 birdies across the field.
The second round started in the mid-70s with mild humidity and little breeze. By the afternoon wave, Dallas temperatures rose to the low 90s with increased humidity and light breezes.
Round 3 begins June 15 at 8:00 a.m., with players teeing off from No. 1 and No. 10.
