Reynolds and Wilhelm Lead After Opening Round of the South Mid-Amateur

Spicewood – Jay Reynolds and Ross Wilhelm each shot 2-under par 69 in the first round of the 2015 South Mid-Amateur Championship, presented by Club Champion. The pair lead by one stroke over Mike Booker and Pat Youngs at Lakecliff Country Club outside of Austin.

Austin’s Jay Reynolds started his round with four straight pars before a birdie on the par four 5th hole.  Reynolds was able to card another birdie on the par five 9th hole to turn at 2-under par 34.  Two more birdies on the back nine and a lone double bogey lead to his opening round 2-under par 69.

San Antonio’s Ross Wilhelm made eight pars and a lone birdie on the par five 4th hole to begin his first round. Three birdies on the back nine, coupled with a double bogey allowed for Wilhelm to move to the top of the standings after day one with his 2-under par 69.

Reynolds and Wilhelm do not lead by much. Sixteen players are within three shots of the first round leaders. Booker, of The Woodlands, and San Antonio’s Youngs are immediately behind the leaders with scores of 1-under par 70. Five players are two strokes back and a group of nine sit just three strokes off of the lead.

Lakecliff CC has hosted Last Chance Qualifying rounds for each of the TGA’s top state championships – the Texas Amateur in 2011 and the Texas Mid-Amateur in 2014. Players will jockey for position during Saturday’s second round, affectionately known in the golf world as “Moving Day”.
