Lawson leads Senior Division, Three tied atop Super Senior Division

Spring – Ivan Lawson leads the Senior Division and three are tied atop of the Super Senior Division after the opening round of the South Senior Amateur Championship. Lawson shot a 2-under par 70 to take a one stroke lead after day one. Marshall Utterson, Charles Reeve, and Peter Kirchner all shot a 1-under par 71 to share the lead in the Super Senior Division. Cypesswood Golf Club (Tradition Course), north of Houston in Spring, is the host site for this year’s championship.

Lawson, of Cypress, recorded three birdies throughout his first round to help take one stroke lead. Lawson didn’t get off to an ideal started and he bogeyed his first hole, the par four 10th. He bounced right back with birdies on the next two holes on his way to a 1-under par first nine total of 35. Lawson would add one more birdie on the day to finish with a 2-under par 70.

The Senior Division will begin play at 8:00 AM with our final group teeing off of Hole #1 at 9:48. Lawson will be joined in the final pairing by Bobby Baugh, of San Antonio, and John Dowdall, of Fulshear. Both Baugh and Dowdall are one stroke back after carding a 1-under par 71.

The defending South Senior Amateur Champion, David Ortego, shot a 2-over par 74 and is four strokes off of Lawson’s lead.

Three are tied for the lead in the Super Senior Division at 1-under par 71. The threesome includes Utterson and Reeve, both of Houston, and Kirchner, of Spring. Utterson and Kirchner are both past Super Senior Division champions. Utterson was the champion in 2014 at Raveneaux Country Club and Kirchner was the champion in 2012 at the Club at Falcon Point.  Alone in fourth place is Tom McGraw, of Montgomery, after carding an even par 72.

The defending South Super Senior Champion, Chris Larsen, shot a 1-over par 73 and is tied for fifth place.
