Cassity Leads after Round 1 at Womens Eclectic
MONTGOMERY – Caitlyn Cassity of Katy shot a 2-over-par 75 in the first round of the 2017 Women’s Eclectic on a brisk Monday morning at scenic Walden on Lake Conroe. Cassidy takes a one-shot lead into Tuesday’s final round in the Overall Gross competition. In the Net competition, Tani Traver of Montgomery posted a 5-under 68 to stake a one-stroke advantage midway through the tournament.
Cassity, who played collegiately at Houston Baptist, finished strong on her back nine. She displayed steady golf and posted a 1-under 36 on her final nine holes of the first round. She bogeyed the 11th hole, a double-dogleg par-5 that plays downhill toward Lake Conroe and was one of the toughest holes on the course. Cassity bounced back with birdies on the 13th and 18th holes to grab the first round lead.
Patti Carnes of McKinney trails Cassity by one stroke. She began her round on the fourth hole and proceed to record four straight pars. Carnes finished the back nine holes with a 1-under par 36. Jewell Malick of Heath is three shots behind Cassity at 5-over 78.
Texas Golf Hall of Famer Carolyn Creekmore, the 2016 Women’s Eclectic Overall Gross Champion, shot a 6-over par 79. Tied with Creekmore is Rachel Philips of Plano. Eleven competitors are within nine shots of Cassity headed into Tuesday’s final round.
There are a total of seven flights in this year’s tournament. Leading the second flight is Carner of McKinney with a 3-over 76. Linda Sackett of Boerne, Sandra Manard of The Hills and Jenine Kuss of Austin all sit atop the leaderboard in Flight 3. Amy Goodwin of McKinney shot a 12-over 85 to lead Flight 4. Cheryl Wright of Huntsville leads Flight 5 by five strokes. Tani Traver, who leads the Overall Net competition, also leads Flight 6 by six strokes over Lucinda Cowan of Longview. Marti Gerbert of Boerne and Jennifer LeBlanc of Magnolia lead Flight 7 by one stroke over Dianne Morris of Austin.
The Eclectic is two-day event which each player takes her better hole score over two rounds. The 112-player field was preflighted by handicap index into seven flights. All players are competing within their flights and for the title of Overall Gross and Overall Net.
