South Team Surges to 14-10 Lead at Jackie Burke Cup
TYLER, TX – The South Team secures eight out of 12 possible points in the second-round Foursome matches to take a 14-10 lead in the 13th annual Jackie Burke Cup at The Cascades Club. Teams split the morning Four-Ball matches with six points apiece.
The Jackie Burke Cup is a Ryder Cup-style event and the final tournament on the Legends Junior Tour schedule. Players are teamed up with the top 12 players from north Texas playing the top 12 players from south Texas. Players earned their way onto their teams by earning points towards the LJT Player of the Year standings. The players are captained by Cooper Dossey for the South Team and Blaine Hale Jr. for the North Team.
Dossey, a two-time player in the Jackie Burke Cup, and his team are looking to win the Cup for the first time since 2013. Dossey is currently a member of the Baylor Bears golf team and won his last college event, the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
“Being a captain is different than being a player,” said Dossey after the Foursome Matches, “It’s more stressful since I have less control of the shots, but these are good guys and gals out here on both teams.”
Hale Jr. is a sophomore at Oklahoma University and was a member of the National Champion golf team in 2017. He is looking
for his North Team, which has won the cup the last three years, to comeback and control Sunday’s Singles matches right out of the gate.
When asked about the advice he gave his players before tomorrow’s round, Hale Jr. answered, “Manage the momentum swings tomorrow, match play is a different animal and you can apply pressure to the other team by hitting fairways and greens.”
The matches got started with Four-ball matches in the morning. Boys 15-18 Player of the Year Jansen Smith and McKinney’s Jake Kuwitzky won the first match over Luke Dossey and Trey Bosco, 2 up. Smith made birdies on holes 16, 17 and 18 to help seal the charge by Dossey and Bosco.
