Play Suspended During First Round of Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship
HOUSTON – Heavy rains and lightning in the area forced a suspension of play midway through the first round of the Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship at Northgate Country Club.
The championship committee made the decision to postpone the round after the second weather delay of the day. Heavy rains and lightning forced players off the course for the first time at 10:22 a.m. After a two hour, eight-minute delay, players returned to the course to resume the round.
However, more lightning struck in the area shortly after 2 p.m., which forced players back into the clubhouse. With players only having completed 10 holes, the decision was made to postpone the round until Tuesday morning.
More than a quarter inch of rain fell in just a few hours. That led to soggy and unplayable conditions all over the course. Ultimately, though, it was the nearby lightning that led to the suspension.
First round play will resume Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Once players complete that round, they will get a short break before the second round begins at noon.
