Marcus and Avery Jones Win Texas Father-Son

Mansfield – Final round of the Texas Father-Son is a wrap, and another memorable tournament is in the books. Etched in TGA history are Marcus and Avery Jones who managed to be the only team to finish sub-par after three rounds. With a score of 6-under-par, they surpassed the rest of the field by seven strokes. John and Drew Ironside claimed second place at 1-over-par, while Dave and Tom Moore, Dustin and Lincoln Sherrill, Casey and Cooper Hollomon, and Mike and Connor Chism shared third.

Marcus and Avery Jones jumped into the lead early, opening with four combined birdies across their first three holes. The pair mentions in their interview that the “hot start” along with “playing relaxed” helped dial their play. They would go on to card three additional birdies, along with a few scattered bogeys, as both players finished with 1-over-par 71s. When asked about how it feels to win as father and son, Marcus said, “It’s a dream of mine,” and “A good memory for a long time.” The victory provided a lasting memory for the Jones family, celebrating not only their accomplishment on the course, but also the special bond they share as father and son.

Maintaining steady play through the front nine, John and Drew Ironside sat at 2-over-par and 1-over-par. The team’s momentum faded slightly on their second nine, amassing seven bogeys to finish at 10-over on the day. In total they recorded a 1-over-par as a 3-round total to earn second place.

Championship Presidents Flight – Stephen and Karsten Paciotti captured the Championship’s Presidents Flight title after overcoming a unique challenge to begin the tournament. Travel issues prevented Karsten from competing in the opening round, leaving Stephen to take on the course alone. Stephen went on to post a 77, putting the team in second to last. With the duo reunited for the second round, the Paciottis found their rhythm, improving by 11 strokes with a 66 to climb the leaderboard. Entering the final round just one shot off the lead in the Presidents Flight, they seized the opportunity, carding a 3-under-par round to secure the championship by two strokes.

Finishing in second was Brad Knox and Cordell Knox at 2-over-par. Kraig and Randy Zimmerhanzel collected third place with a total score of 5-over-par.

WEATHER: With the first two rounds already interrupted by weather, it was no surprise when play was delayed for a third straight day. Up until 2:56pm, when the air horns were blown, the day was overcast and comfortable with low to mid eighty-degree temperatures. Similarly to the other two weather delays, wind became prominent throughout the duration of the storm. Light rain followed the restart of play (3:45pm) briefly before conditions improved, with winds remaining mild at 5–10 mph. A second lightning delay stinted play at 6:10pm. Resumption occurred at 7:30pm allowing our last flight groups to finish just before dark.

GOLF COURSE: Located in Mansfield TX, Walnut Creek Country Club is comprised of two championship-worthy golf courses. The Texas Father-Son is being held on the Pecan Course, designed by Don January, which is the club’s original course. Measuring 6,618 yards and playing to a par-70, the Pecan Course features a classic design that offers an excellent test for golfers of all skill levels. The back nine of the Pecan Course presents a particularly demanding challenge, testing every player’s shot-making ability as it plays into the prevailing southerly wind. Combined with the need for consistent execution, strong shot-making will undoubtedly be a key factor in determining the outcome of this exciting event.

FORMAT: The Championship Division consists of 32 teams. These teams will play four-ball stroke play in rounds one and two. After 36 holes, the Championship Division was separated into two flights. The low 18 teams remained in the Championship Flight and will play Combined Score (individual stroke play using both players scores) in the final round to determine the overall champion. The remaining 16 teams from the Championship Division were placed in the Presidents Flight and will play another round of four-ball stroke play for their final round. Teams will carry their 36-hole total score forward to determine the President Flight winner. The team with the lowest 54-hole total will determine the winner in each flight.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Texas Father-Son, now in its 46th year, is one of the most popular events on the Texas Golf Association’s annual schedule. First held in 1981, this tournament has become a longstanding summer tradition for many families. In the 2025 edition, Chris and Price Hill prevailed after a weather-shortened event.
