Regional Senior Amateurs set for March 30-31
The Texas Golf Association’s men’s regional tournament series continues this spring with the North and South Regional Senior Amateurs, set for March 30-31 to close out a competitive month.
The North Regional Senior Amateur will be played at Luna Vista Golf Course in Dallas, while the South Regional Senior Amateur will take place at Lakecliff Golf Club in Spicewood. Both venues will host the event for the first time.
Luna Vista Golf Course traces its origins to 1969, when it opened as L.B. Houston Municipal Golf Course within the city’s L.B. Houston Sports Complex. Designed by Leon Howard and Dave Bennett, the course became a staple for Dallas-area golfers, offering an accessible municipal layout alongside nearby recreational facilities.
In 2012, the course underwent a full renovation and was rebranded as Luna Vista Golf Course. The redesign, led by architects John Colligan and Trey Kemp, included reshaped fairways and greens, new bunkers and tee boxes, and updated practice facilities. Today, Luna Vista remains a city-owned public course that serves a wide range of players.
Lakecliff Golf Club opened in 2003 as part of a master-planned community overlooking Lake Travis, reflecting the growth of high-end residential golf developments west of Austin in the early 2000s. The private course was designed by Arnold Palmer, whose firm emphasized the natural features of the Texas Hill Country, incorporating cliffs, ravines and lake views into the layout.
Built with bentgrass greens and enhanced by man-made lakes and waterfalls, the course was designed to provide a scenic, resort-style playing experience uncommon for the region. The club primarily serves members and their guests and is closely tied to the surrounding residential development. Former Major League Baseball player Jeff Kent has been associated with ownership of the community.
Both championships will follow the same format. A field of 84 players — 60 seniors and 24 super seniors — will compete in 36 holes of individual stroke play over two days with no cut. Each division will play from different tees and yardages, with separate champions crowned. Players 65 and older may choose to compete in the senior division upon entry.
The top 15 finishers and ties in the senior division will earn exemptions into the 89th Texas Senior Amateur presented by Republic Aviation, scheduled for Sept. 11-13 at BraeBurn Country Club in Houston. The top five finishers and ties will also receive performance points toward the Senior Player of the Year race.
Starting times and first-round pairings for both championships will be posted on the TGA website no later than March 25. Live scoring and updates will be available on Texas Golf Association social media channels throughout the event.
At the 2025 championships, Steve Love of Irving won the North Regional Senior Amateur with rounds of 68 and 73 for a 3-under-par 141 total at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson. Michael Jones of Richardson won the Super Senior Division in a playoff with an even-par 144.
In the South Regional Senior Amateur, Tray Tyner of Kerrville posted a 1-under 141 to claim the title at Northgate Country Club. Chris Stuth of Houston won the Super Senior Division at 7-over 149.
