
Solis Wins the South Amateur
Briefly: A course record tying second round 11-under par 61 helped set the stage for Laredo’s John Solis to capture the 2025 South Amateur. Solis’ second round score put him atop the record books with PGA Tour’s Jhonattan Vegas, who is also a member at The Woodlands Country Club.
Top Finishers: Solis claimed a one-stroke victory after 54 holes with a par securing putt. Solis recorded three rounds of 70-61-70 to get to post 15-under par. In second place was Jonathan Kim from Cedar Park who posted rounds of 66-70-66 for a total of 14-under.
McAllen’s Esteban Gonzalez went 67-66-71 to post 12-under for the weekend to finish alone in third place. In fourth place was Alex Malanga from The Woodlands who posted rounds of 67-68-70, good for 11-under.
Golf Course: The West Course at The Woodlands Country Club was originally designed by Joe Lee and Robert von Hagge and opened in 1975. Jay Morrish & Associates supervised an extensive course remodel project in 1999 which included reshaping and rebuilding tees, bunkers, and putting greens.
Weather: Sunny skies filled the West Course of The Woodlands Country Club with high temperatures in the 90s with a light breeze on Sunday afternoon.
Regional POY: Player of the Year points will be awarded to the top 30 finishers at the 2025 South Amateur with the champion will receive 1,000 points. For Regional POY information, click here.
What’s Next: With the conclusion of the 2025 TGA Regional Series, next on the state championship schedule is the Texas Four-Ball. Registration for the Four-Ball will close on August 13 at 5:00 pm, and the championship will be held at Tempest Golf Club from August 22-24. Qualifying for the 42nd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US is nearly complete, and the championship will take place at Champions Golf Club in Houston from September 5-7.
