Steve Love, Michael Jones Win North Senior Amateur

Briefly: Irving’s Steve Love outpaces the field to win the North Senior Amateur’s Senior Division by 2-strokes. Love started the final round with a four shot lead and posted a final round 1-over par score to sit atop the leaderboard at 3-under par for the championship. Michael Jones goes wire-to-wire to take the Super Senior Division by playoff after posting a round one score of three-under par. Jones hit a 70-foot put on his last hole of the day in order to sneak into a playoff with Larry Corson of Dallas and didn’t look back. 

Final Results 

Golf Course: This is the first Regional Championship held at Sherrill Park Golf Course. Located in Richardson, TX, their property offers terrific views and challenging play for golfers of all levels. Course One was built in 1973 by architects Leon Howard and Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design, boasting well-groomed bermuda fairways and greens. Dallas Morning News consistently ranks Sherrill Park in the top 10 municipal golf courses in the metroplex, solidifying its reputation as a high-quality public track.   

Weather: Monday’s opening round of the North Senior Amateur welcomed the players with mostly sunny and calm winds. The field saw a high of high-60’s throughout the day. Tuesday’s final round started with foggy conditions which later cleared as the wind picked up. Partly cloudy skies and windy conditions were consistent throughout the day with a high of 81 degrees.  

Top Finishers: Love played steady golf throughout the championship, able to close out the week two strokes ahead of Plano’s John Schaefer and three strokes ahead of McKinney’s Rob Willbanks. Willbanks shot an impressive second round best 4-under par 68 to climb 15 positions on the leaderboard and catapult himself into the top 3 of the Senior Division. Finishing in solo fourth at 1-over par out of Flower Mound is Jeff Dodson. 

Super Senior Division: Michael Jones was able to hold off Larry Corson of Dallas in a one-hole sudden elimination playoff off of hole #10. Jones carded a 3-under par in round one which put him in prime position to follow up with a 3-over par round two in order to hold off the field. Rounding out the top three finishers in the Super Senior Division is Sam Manning of Dallas who finished third. Manning fired a field best 4-under par 68 on the final day of the tournament to jump eight spots nearly earning a spot in the playoff by just one stroke. 

Regional POY: Texas Senior and Super Senior Player of the Year points will be awarded to the top finishers at the 2025 South Senior Amateur. The winning player in each division will receive 500 points, followed by 400 for second place, 300 for third, 200 for fourth, and 100 for fifth. For TGA Player Of the Year information, click here.  

What’s Next: The next event in the Regional Series will be the 97th West Texas Amateur at Abilene Country Club on the South Course. Registration will open on May 21 at 9:00 AM and is open to players from all over the state. The event will be played July 18-20 and consist of three divisions – Open, Senior, and Super Senior. The final regional event of the North Series will be the North Amateur at Wichita Falls Country Club. Registration will open at 9:00 AM on June 11.
