43rd Texas Mid-Amateur, presentd by Hytera US set for October 2-4
The Texas Golf Association’s major championship season will come to a close Oct. 2-4 when the 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US heads to Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls.
“We are excited for the Texas Mid-Amateur to be here,” said TGA Senior Tournament Director Chris Untiedt. “This is always an exciting event, and the mid-amateur players always show out for this championship. This year will be no different.”
First contested in 1984, the Texas Mid-Amateur is open to male amateur golfers age 25 and older and has become one of the TGA’s premier championships. The 54-hole stroke-play championship brings together some of the state’s top amateur golfers beyond the traditional college-age ranks, with the championship traveling throughout Texas to some of the state’s most notable golf courses.
The inaugural Texas Mid-Amateur was won by Butch Links of Gainesville at Del Lago Country Club. Links would go on to win the championship again in 1988 at Hackberry Creek Country Club, becoming the first of several players to claim multiple Texas Mid-Amateur titles.
The Texas Mid-Amateur returns to Wichita Falls Country Club for the first time since 1998, when Houston’s Bob Kearney captured the championship. Kearney finished the 54-hole championship at 8-under-par 208 to claim the title.
Wichita Falls Country Club has a long and distinguished history of hosting championship golf in Texas. Founded in 1914 as Wichita Falls Golf Club, the club began as a nine-hole layout designed by Fred Cooper before expanding to 18 holes in 1935. The club has undergone several improvements throughout its history, including a comprehensive renovation overseen by golf course architects D.A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard that was completed in 2008.
The club has hosted mutiple TGA championships across seven different championship events. Wichita Falls Country Club has previously hosted the Texas Amateur in 1947, 1960 and 1979; the Texas Senior Amateur in 1976, 1984, 1990 and 1995; the Women’s Texas Amateur in 1997; the Texas Mid-Amateur in 1998; the Texas Senior Women’s Stroke Play Championship in 2015; the Texas Four-Ball in 2019; and the Texas Father-Son Championship in 2003 and 2022. The club has also continued its relationship with the TGA in recent years, hosting the North Amateur and Red River Cup Matches in 2025.
“Wichita Falls Country Club has been a phenomenal member club of the Texas Golf Association,” said Untiedt. “They have hosted multiple majors and statewide events along with USGA qualifiers. The course brings out the best in players, and we believe that will be true for this year’s edition of the state championship.”
Many of Texas’ top mid-amateur players are set to compete in the 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US.
Defending champion Kade Stewart of Houston will return to defend his title after capturing the 42nd Texas Mid-Amateur at Champions Golf Club in dramatic fashion. Stewart defeated Kolton Crawford of Azle and Robert Gwin of Montgomery in a playoff after finishing the championship at 6-under 207. Stewart looks to become the first player to successfully defend the Texas Mid-Amateur title since San Antonio’s Colby Harwell won back-to-back championships in 2017 and 2018.
Christopher Wheeler, the 2019 champion, also returns to the field following a semifinal appearance at the 2026 Crump Cup at Pine Valley Golf Club. Meanwhile, 2008 champion Rob Couture will look to capture his second Texas Mid-Amateur title.
The field will also feature Michael Carnes of New Braunfels, who enters the championship following a standout summer. Carnes captured the 98th West Texas Amateur at Midland Country Club and followed that victory by winning the 28th Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship presented by Sun Cruiser at Big Easy Ranch.
The Texas Mid-Amateur will also serve as the final opportunity for men’s players to earn points toward the TGA State Player of the Year race. Carnes enters the championship within striking distance of current leader Harwell, adding another storyline to an already competitive field as the TGA’s major championship season reaches its conclusion.

The 43rd Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US will be contested over 54 holes of individual stroke play at Wichita Falls Country Club. The field is limited to 132 players, with competitors playing 36 holes over the first two rounds before the field is cut to the low 54 players and ties for the final round.
The championship will begin Friday, Oct. 2 off Nos. 1 and 10 tees in a double wave start.
First- and second-round pairings will be released Monday, Sept. 28, and will be available on the Texas Golf Association website.
