The state’s leading male amateur golfers ages 25 and older will journey to Denton Country Club in Argyle for the 41st Texas Mid-Amateur Championship presented by Hytera US, which will be played from Sept. 6-8.
This marks the second TGA championship contested at Denton Country Club in the last three years. The club previously hosted the 2022 Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play, won by Jason Schultz.
“The TGA is thrilled to be back at Denton Country Club for this year’s Texas Mid-Amateur and to have Hytera US as the presenting sponsor,” said Justin Guthrie, TGA Tournament Director. “We are confident this will be an ideal stage for a top-tier championship and will prove to be a fantastic experience for the players.”
One of the oldest clubs in North Texas, Denton Country Club opened with a nine-hole course in 1922. The club expanded to 18 holes in the late 1960s with an original design by Texas Golf Hall of Fame architect Ralph Plummer. The par-71 layout is routed on 215 acres of rolling countryside and is highlighted by tree-lined playing corridors, numerous hazards, and small, sloping greens.
“Denton Country Club is a classic test in that it emphasizes accuracy over distance,” Guthrie said. “It requires you to put yourself in the proper spots off the tee in order to attack most hole locations. It’s going to present a challenge to a player’s entire game and is certain to produce a worthy champion.”
The starting field for the 41st Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Hytera US will be comprised of 132 players who earned entry into the championship through one of 19 exemption categories or successfully advanced out of 18-hole qualifying held at 13 sites statewide from July 13-Aug. 26.
Format for the championship is 54 holes individual stoke play. All contestants will play 18 holes Sept. 6-7. After 36 holes the field will be cut to the low 54 scorers and ties heading into the final round. In addition to the prize awarded to the overall champion, there also will be special recognition for the mid-master (players ages 40 and older) returning the lowest 54-hole score.
Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds will be posted on the TGA website no later than Sept. 3. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Denton Country Club.
The roster of accomplished players who will assemble in Argyle is headed by Josh Pasco of Midland, who carded a final-round 65 to win last year’s Texas Mid-Amateur with a 54-hole total of 7-under-par 209 at Midland Country Club.
Besides Pasco, seven other Texas Mid-Amateur champions are in the starting field: Ryan O’Rear of Georgetown (2020, ’22), Frederick Janneck of Fort Worth (2021), Christopher Wheeler of Addison (2019), Colby Harwell of San Antonio (2017, ’18), Clay Hodge of Tyler (2013), Beau Davis of Fort Worth (2011), and Rob Couture of Celina (2008).
Among the other notable players competing are Texas Mid-Amateur Match Play champions Cal Clyde of Houston (2024), Aaron Hickman of Tyler (2020, ’23) and Zach Atkinson of Colleyville (2016), 2023 North and South Regional Players of the Year Ryan Zamarano of Dallas and Logan Thomason of Montgomery, respectively, as well as top finishers returning from last year’s championship including Gant Bills of Plano (3rd), Austin Jordan of Nemo (T4), and Marcus Jones of Argyle (T8). Bills, who finished with a 54-hole total of 4-under 212 at Midland Country Club, also earned low mid-master honors.
The TGA is proud to welcome Hytera US, an industry leader in digital radio communications, as a new corporate partner. The California-based company has come aboard as the presenting sponsor of the Texas Mid-Amateur Championship beginning in 2024 and continuing through 2026.
First held in 1984, the Texas Mid-Amateur is one of the four TGA men’s major amateur championships conducted each year, along with the Texas Amateur, Texas Senior Amateur, and Texas Four-Ball. The Texas Mid-Amateur has produced a distinguished list of champions over the last four decades, including Texas Golf Hall of Fame members Randy Sonnier (1985), John Grace (1991-94), and Mike Booker (2003).
