36th Women’s Senior Stroke Play set for Aug 25-27

The 36th Women’s Senior Stroke Play Championship will head to BraeBurn Country Club to close out an exciting summer schedule. The championship is set for Aug. 25-27.

“We are excited to be heading to such a special venue,” Texas Golf Association Director of Women’s Golf Kristi Knight said. “BraeBurn has a rich history, and the club has already hosted several TGA major championships with more on the way. Bringing this event to an elite championship course will be a memorable experience for the players.”

Founded in 1926 and originally named Colonial Country Club, BraeBurn traces its roots to legendary architect John Bredemus, often called the “Father of Texas Golf.” Bredemus, the state’s first resident golf course architect, was known for his minimalist design style, shaping courses with little earth movement. His work at The Lido Club and Colonial Country Club earned him national recognition, and he collaborated with renowned figures including C.B. Macdonald, Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell.

Over the decades, BraeBurn has played host to several historic moments in golf. During World War II, the club staged exhibitions to support the war effort, including matches featuring some of the era’s biggest stars. It went on to host the 1950 Houston Open, won by Cary Middlecoff, and the 1952 Houston Weathervane Open, where Betsy Rawls defeated Babe Didrikson Zaharias. The course also welcomed the 1954 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, U.S. Ryder Cup practice rounds, and Greg Norman’s Miracle Golf Tournament featuring Fred Couples, Mark O’Meara and other greats.

In 2020, BraeBurn underwent a full renovation led by architect Tripp Davis, who modernized the course’s infrastructure and playability while preserving its historic character.

“One of the great corollaries between BraeBurn and the TGA is that Betsy Rawls won the 1952 Houston Weathervane Open here,” Knight said. “Rawls is one of the most important figures in Texas women’s golf, so to hold a championship where she once won is very special.”

At last year’s championship, held at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Course, Claudia Ramirez captured the title with rounds of 79-80-83.

In addition to the overall title, players will also compete for the Founders Cup, awarded to the club with the two lowest combined net scores from the first round. The Woodlands Country Club claimed the trophy last year behind Maura Price, Margaret Bosman and Lorraine Werner, who finished at 6-over.

This year’s championship will be contested over 54 holes of stroke play. Following 36 holes, the field will be divided into flights for the final round.

The opening round begins Friday, Aug. 25, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
