24th Texas Shootout Set for November 7-8 at Ridgewood Country Club

Ridgewood Country Club in Waco will host the 24th playing of the Texas Shootout, November 7-8, as top-ranked amateurs from North and South Texas meet in the TGA’s annual 12-man team competition.

The South Texas team returns as defending champion after a 46-26 rout of the North at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club last November. That win trimmed North Texas’ lead in the all-time series to 12-11.

This will be the first Texas Shootout staged at Ridgewood, a longtime TGA partner that hosted the 116th Texas Amateur and the 18th Women’s Four-Ball in 2025. The club has also been home to the 2020 Texas Senior Amateur, the 2019 Texas Super Senior Amateur and five Women’s Texas Amateurs dating back to 1956.

“Ridgewood has been one of the TGA’s most dependable partners for decades, and we’re excited to bring the Texas Shootout to Waco for the first time,” said Tournament Director Duffy Suhr. “The membership takes real pride in hosting championship golf, and there’s no better way to close out our men’s season than with the best mid-amateurs and seniors in the state playing for their side of Texas.”

Ridgewood opened in 1947 with an 18-hole layout by Texas Golf Hall of Famer Ralph Plummer, set on roughly 170 acres of rolling, wooded land overlooking Lake Waco. Plummer returned in the early 1960s to rework the course after the lake’s expansion reshaped the property.

Architect Tripp Davis led a renovation in 2023 that rebuilt the tees, bunkers and greens and upgraded the drainage. The par-70 layout opens with a demanding par 4 that plays off a hillside with views of the water, and Lake Waco frames the short par-3 16th down the right side.

“Ridgewood is a classic Plummer design that asks you to control your ball flight and think your way around,” Suhr said. “The greens have plenty of movement, and with Lake Waco in play on a few holes and the wind that can come off the water in November, match play is going to reward the player who’s patient and commits to his shots.”

Each team is made up of eight mid-amateurs (age 25 and older) and four seniors (age 55 and older). Four mid-amateurs per side qualify through the TGA Statewide Player of the Year standings and four through the Regional Player of the Year standings. The seniors are the top four from each region in the TGA Senior Player of the Year standings through the Texas Senior Amateur. The North-South dividing line is the 31st parallel, which runs through Salado, roughly halfway between Austin and Waco.

The Shootout opens Saturday with Foursome matches in the morning and Four-Ball in the afternoon, followed by Singles on Sunday. Each of the 24 matches is worth three points, one each for the front nine, back nine and overall result, for 72 total points. The first team to 36.5 points wins, and a tie means the defending champion South retains the trophy.

At Fair Oaks Ranch in 2025, the South grabbed 16.5 of 18 available points in the opening Foursome session and never looked back. Houston’s Chris Minton led the way with 8.5 of a possible 9 points, and his Sunday Singles win clinched the title for the South team captained by San Antonio’s John Pierce.

Player registration and practice rounds are set for Friday, Nov. 6, with Foursome matches beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. Pairings for each session are drawn the night before and will be posted on the TGA website along with live scoring and daily recaps.
