117th Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US set for June 18-21
The 117th Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US heads to Spanish Oaks Golf Club for the first time in the event’s history. The first major championship on the men’s calendar is set for June 18-21.
“We couldn’t be more excited for the Texas Amateur to take place at Spanish Oaks Golf Club,” said Senior Tournament Director Chris Untiedt. “They hosted the 103rd Women’s Texas Amateur and now they will get to see the best men’s amateur players in the state compete on their course for one of the most historic titles in all of amateur golf.”
Conducted by the Texas Golf Association since 1906, the Texas Amateur is the premier amateur golf championship in the state. In its 117-year history, champions have claimed the H.L. Edwards Trophy en route to historic careers — names such as Charles Coody, Scott Verplank, John Grace, Ryan Baca and Ben Crenshaw, among many others. Now a new name will be added to the H.L. Edwards Trophy at one of the finest clubs in the state.
Designed by former PGA Tour course architect Bobby Weed, Spanish Oaks quickly established itself as one of the nation’s premier private golf clubs after opening, earning widespread praise for both its playability and its respect for the natural landscape. Nestled in the rolling Texas Hill Country, Weed’s design takes full advantage of the property’s dramatic terrain, allowing the course to move naturally across hillsides and valleys. Rather than forcing the land to fit the golf course, the routing was carefully crafted to complement the existing topography, creating a layout that feels as though it has always belonged there.

Environmental stewardship was a guiding principle throughout the development of Spanish Oaks. Weed and his team worked to restore the property by reintroducing native grasses that had disappeared over decades of grazing and erosion, while preserving the site’s natural beauty through the integration and transplantation of existing trees whenever possible. The club utilizes reclaimed water for irrigation, reflecting a long-term commitment to sustainability. The course’s core-routing design keeps homes on the perimeter and golf holes within the valleys, enhancing both the purity of the golf experience and the sense of immersion in the Hill Country landscape. The result is a championship-caliber venue that seamlessly blends exceptional design with deep respect for the environment.
“Spanish Oaks Golf Club will be a great test for the competitors,” Untiedt said. “It’s not often in Texas you get to play a course with dramatic elevation changes, and Spanish Oaks offers plenty of that along with challenging par 3s. I believe the players will enjoy the test the course provides, offering quite a few risk-reward shots throughout the event to separate themselves or make things more difficult.”
The Texas Amateur enters its third consecutive year as an official USGA Exemption Event. The champion of the 117th Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US will earn an exemption directly into the 126th U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club.
The Texas Golf Association set a record 1,131 entries for the 117th Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US at Spanish Oaks Golf Club, surpassing last year’s mark of 1,085 and marking the fifth consecutive year of more than 1,000 entries.
TCU golfer Toby Wilt of Fort Worth won the 116th Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US at Ridgewood Country Club. With the victory, Wilt earned an exemption into the 125th U.S. Amateur at Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Along with Wilt, players who finished in the top 10 and ties earned exemptions into U.S. Amateur Final Stage Qualifying. That group included Hudson Wilt of Fort Worth, Carson Gallaher of New Braunfels, Jaxon Bandelier of Austin, Andrew Paysse of Temple, Ryan O’Rear of Leander, Adam Villanueva of Austin, Braden Smith of Lago Vista, Andrew Baucum of Heath and Price Hill of Boerne.
The championship format is 72 holes of individual stroke play. All competitors will play 18 holes June 18-19. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 54 scorers and ties heading into the final two rounds.
Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds will be posted to the TGA website no later than Monday, June 15. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will be available online once play begins at Spanish Oaks Golf Club.
