Live Oak Golf Club (formerly Diamondback National Golf Club) in Abilene will be the host site for the 10th Texas Super Senior Amateur, to be played from April 22-24.
This year’s Texas Super Senior Amateur will be the fifth TGA championship held at Live Oak Golf Club, which most recently hosted the 95th West Texas Amateur in 2023, won by Will Adams of Odessa.
“We are thrilled to return to such a wonderful venue as Live Oak Golf Club,” said Chris Untiedt, TGA Senior Tournament Director. “The club has been a tremendous supporter of the amateur game over the years, and we know the membership and staff are looking forward to showcasing their exceptional facility and providing a memorable championship experience.”
Opened in 1999, Live Oak Golf Club was designed by Abilene resident and 1971 Masters champion Charles Coody, along with Williams, Gill & Associates. Situated on 220 acres of rolling terrain, the par-71 course, which can stretch to nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees, features dramatic rock outcroppings, extensive native areas, and Lytle Creek coming into play on nearly half the holes.
“Live Oak is a great layout and can be very challenging, especially when the wind picks up,” Untiedt said. “The course will be an excellent test for the players and will certainly make for an exciting championship.”
First conducted in 2015, the Texas Super Senior features two age divisions: 65 and older (Super Senior) and 75 and older (Legends). Entries are open to male amateur golfers who meet the age requirements by the first round of tournament play and have an up-to-date WHS™ Handicap Index not exceeding 12.4 (16.4 for Legends) issued through a member club of the TGA.
The starting field of 84 players (60 Super Seniors, 24 Legends) will play 54 holes of individual stroke play over three days with no cut. Each age division will compete from different tees and yardages, with separate champions recognized. Players who are 75 and older can opt to compete in the Super Senior Division at the time an entry form is submitted. The top three finishers and ties in the Super Senior Division, regardless of age, and the winner of the Legends Division will earn exemptions into this year’s Texas Senior Amateur to be held this fall at a site to be announced. In addition to the overall Super Senior and Legends champions, awards will also be given to the lowest net scores in each division.
Starting times and pairings for the first and second rounds will be posted to the TGA website no later than April 17. Live scoring updates and daily recaps will also be available online once the action gets underway from Live Oak Golf Club.
At the 2024 Texas Super Senior Amateur, Hollis Sullivan of Westworth Village edged out David Leiss of Houston on the first playoff hole to claim the championship title at Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land. Sullivan carded a final round 3-under-par 69 to overcome a five-stroke deficit to tie Leiss at 4-over 220 at the end of regulation play. Texas Golf Hall of Famer John Grace of Fort Worth posted three consecutive rounds of even-par 72 to notch a wire-to-wire victory in the Legends Division. Adrian Walmsley of Dallas and Jay Trahan of Montgomery won low net honors in the Super Senior and Legends Divisions, respectively.
